Core membership insurance

Your membership comes with automatic equipment and public liability insurance.

  • £2 million public liability cover (£500 excess per claim)
  • £2,000 equipment cover (£150 excess per claim)
  • Covers your work in a studio, writing and recording
  • Includes small-scale performances (up to 300 capacity), worldwide

Public liability insurance

Public liability insurance, sometimes referred to as PL or PLI, provides cover if your negligence leads to bodily injury of a member of the public or damage to third party property.

Proof of public liability insurance is sometimes required by venues and studios before you are allowed to perform or record, even if proof is not specifically requested by a venue or studio, it is still an important cover to have.

Not only does it cover you when performing live in front of audiences of up to 300 people, it also covers you for all other work within your profession, for example when recording in a studio, attending awards in your professional capacity, doing interviews etc.

If an incident occurs, and a third party contacts you alleging your negligence has caused damage or injury, insurance provider, Howden Music, should be notified immediately and their in-house claims team will discuss the options with you.

You should also email us so we know a claim has been made. This process will usually begin with all parties working to establish/prove if you have been negligent. Legal negotiations and defence are covered under the policy as well as any agreed award to the third party should you be found negligent.

Equipment insurance

Equipment insurance provides cover for your musical equipment, laptops and phones used for your business, worldwide, against theft, physical loss, or accidental damage.

The policy will pay for a like-for-like replacement, or for the repair (if possible and more cost-effective), of a damaged or stolen item.

If you were to drop your laptop and cause it to break, or knock over your guitar and snap the neck, this is the section of the policy that would respond.

If an incident occurs, and your equipment is damaged or stolen, insurance provider, MIB, should be notified immediately and their in-house claims team will discuss the options with you. You should also notify The Ivors Academy to let us know that a claim has been made. If an item is stolen, it is imperative that this is reported to the police as soon as possible and a crime reference number is obtained.
