The Ivors Academy’s current campaigns

The Ivors Academy is the UK professional association for songwriters and composers, and a large part of its work is advocacy on behalf of music creators. Several campaigns run in parallel, and most of the working-conditions issues in this chapter connect to one of them.

The per diem agreement for songwriters is a recent, concrete result. The next aim is to extend the principle so that any creator commissioned for a session is paid for their time, beyond those invited to major-label camps.

Fairer remuneration from streaming is a longer-running priority. The argument is that the song is undervalued relative to the recording in how streaming income is divided, and the campaign presses for a larger share to reach writers and the people who hold publishing rights.

Credits Due is an initiative, run with the Music Rights Awareness Foundation, to fix the metadata problem: the gap that arises when recordings are released without accurate information identifying the writers. The Academy has estimated that around £500 million in global streaming royalties is misallocated or goes unpaid each year as a result. Getting five core data points attached to a recording at the point of creation is the practical fix it advocates. The Catalogue and metadata chapter covers what those identifiers are and how to get them right.

Artificial intelligence is now a central concern: how music is used to train AI systems, on what terms, and how creators are credited and paid. The AI and copyright chapter looks at where this stands.

Other active areas include fairer commissioning terms for media composers, public arts funding, and the session and caring-responsibility issues covered above. You do not need to be heavily involved for the outcomes to reach you, but campaigns of this kind gain weight as more creators back them publicly.
